PHHA announces Retirement Savings Plan

from the Pennsylvania Harness Horsemen’s Assn.

Harrisburg, PA — The Pennsylvania Harness Horsemen’s Association (PHHA) has launched a Retirement Savings Plan for its members at Harrah’s Chester Casino & Racetrack and Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.

The plan, which was approved by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board on November 8, will go into effect immediately. To be eligible, participants must be members of the PHHA who are active drivers and/or trainers at one of the two member tracks. Participants will earn points based on the number of qualified starts per calendar year and will be considered fully vested when they have accumulated a total of seven points.

Benefits are distributed at retirement or after attaining the age of 62. In the event of death or total disability, benefits are distributed at that time. In addition, the plan allows that participants who are temporarily disabled shall not forfeit their benefits even though they may not be able to contribute for a certain period of time.

“Drivers and trainers deserve the same level of security as other professional athletes,” said Earl Beal, Jr., PHHA President. “This retirement savings plan will help give our members additional peace of mind regarding their retirement years. Also, because it was designed with the special needs of our members in mind, it provides a security blanket in the event of disability, which is an occupational hazard for all athletes.”

The PHHA Retirement Savings Plan was provisioned for under Pennsylvania’s slot machine gaming legislation, specifically Act 71, Section 1406 (a) (iii) (b) and (c).

Members interested in participating can contact the PHHA’s track offices for details: (570) 824-1849 at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs or (610) 574-5200 at Harrah’s Chester. Members may also visit the PHHA’s Web site at www.pahha.com and click on “Insurance & Retirement Plans” to view the complete application and plan details.
