Southwind Lynx is morning line favorite in Jug Future

by Tom White, publicity director, the Little Brown Jug

Delaware, OH — Southwind Lynx, who has won two million-dollar races this year, the Art Rooney Pace and The Meadowlands Pace, plus a $121,000 division of the Oliver Wendell Holmes, is the 9-2 morning line favorite in the second of three Little Brown Jug future wagering pools. However, the George Teague-trained son of Real Artist finished fifth in last Saturday’s Adios Pace eliminations and failed to qualify for the final.

For the first time ever, a filly, Southwind Tempo, is among the 23 3-year-old pacers listed in the official morning line. Southwind Tempo, listed at odds of 25-1, could be the first filly to race against the boys since Fan Hanover won the Jug in 1981.

If she is eligible to the Jugette, a filly can be entered in the Little Brown Jug by making up the difference of $350 in colt entry fees and by paying the $6,000 starting fee.

Southwind Tempo is trained by Hambletonian winning (Donato Hanover) trainer Steve Elliott.

Also, 2-year-old Breeders Crown champion Charley Barley, who hasn’t started in 2007, remains among the elite 23 with a morning line of 20-1.

Wagering will get underway at 12:00 noon on Thursday, August 16, and continue through 11:30 p.m. Sunday, August 19, at racetracks and internet sites throughout North American and Canada. Complete past performance lines on all Jug eligibles will be available free of charge on the official Little Brown Jug Web site by clicking on the Trackmaster logo. The minimum future bet is $2.00 and all future wagers are win betting only.

Always A Virgin, winner of a division of the Holmes, is next in the morning line at odds of 5-1, while North America Cup winner Tell All is 6-1. May June Character, who won the Adios final over Won The West, is listed at 20-1.

The rest of the 3-year-old colt and gelding pacers are packaged together into one “field” wager. The field will open at 5-1 odds. Every 3-year-old colt and gelding in North America is included in the field because if a colt or gelding wins the Cane Pace he can be supplemented into the Little Brown Jug. Among notable colts included in this week’s field are third-place Adios finisher Pan Giovanni, fourth-place Adios elim finisher TJ’s Ideal and 2007 stakes placed Hot Rod Mindale.

The third and final future Jug pool will be during the first four afternoons of racing at the Delaware, Ohio County Fair (September 16-19).
