My Little Dragon wins duel with Darlins Delight

by Ken Weingartner for the Breeders Crown

Toronto – My Little Dragon made it 2-for-2 in Breeders Crown competition, adding the title for 3-year-old filly pacers Saturday night to the trophy she claimed last season in the 2-year-old division.

My Little Dragon, driven by Brian Sears, won by three-quarters of a length over rival Darlin’s Delight in 1:52.3 at Woodbine Racetrack. Art’s Temptress was third.

It was the fifth win in 11 starts this season for My Little Dragon, who was 6-for-6 as a 2-year-old.

“She deserved it,” trainer Noel Daley said. “She’s had an up-and-down year, but she’s been no worse than second. She tries hard. Once we put her on Lasix [in late September] she’s been strong.”

Art’s Temptress led to the first quarter in 28.2 seconds. Darlin’s Delight, driven by Yannick Gingras, took the top spot as the field reached the half-mile point in 56.2 seconds and continued to lead until My Little Dragon’s challenge coming off the final turn.

“It’s disappointing every time you finish second, especially when you think you have a good shot,” Gingras said. “She raced just great, but got beat by a good filly. They’ve been going at it for two years now. This is not the end of it; they may have won this battle, but the war is far from over.”

Sears now has 12 Breeders Crown wins in his career.

My Little Dragon is owned by the Adam Victor and Son Stable.

“It feels amazing,” Adam Victor Jr. said. “She had her problems all year, but to see her win back-to-back Crowns is just amazing. It has been our goal all along and we thought she had one of the greatest 2-year-old years a filly could have; and combined years put her with the greatest. You will see her race as an older mare.”
