Dead Heat in Hayes Memorial for three-year-old colt pacers

Westway and Thin Blue Line finished in a dead heat in the $37,000 Hayes Memorial for three-year-old colts and geldings at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds on Saturday afternoon.

Out of the startng gate, it was American Fury (Michael Oosting) first to the quarter mile mark of :27.3, followed by Hawaiian Hunk (Tim Tetrick) and Arts Day. Past the quarter, driver John Campbell had Thin Blue Line on the move from fifth, flushing out Arts Day just past the :57.1 half, which saw American Fury get there first. At the 1:25 three quarters, American Fury and Arts Day were about even going in to the homestretch. Fanning out in the stretch, Campbell urged Thin Blue Line up to engage the leaders and those three were joined by West Way (Eric Ledford) and crossed the wire almost together.

It took a photo to decide that there was a dead heat for win between Westway and Thin Blue Line. Arts Day was third by a nose. Hawaiian Hunk was fourth. Westway is owned by Geis, Mathias and Miller and trained by Erv Miller. Thin Blue Line is owned by Oldfield Farm of Michigan and trained by Richard Oldfield.
“Erv said if I’m close, turn him loose and that’s what I did,” said Eric Ledford about Westway. Thin Blue Line’s driver, John Campbell, said “He kept pacing to the wire.”
