Ageless wonders still winning at Scarborough

by Michael Sweeney

Scarborough, ME – Running Home N and Rays Dilemma A proved that age is merely a state of mind today as the pair of 14-year-old veterans won their respective heats at Scarborough Downs.

By rule, all Standardbred pacers must retire from competition at the conclusion of their 14th year, but in actuality very few will continue to campaign at that advanced age due to the high demands exerted on them throughout their careers. Running Home N and Rays Dilemma A are two of just a handful of aged competitors who will continue to grace North American racetracks this season – these two destined to demonstrate their talents before the local fans in southern Maine.

Owned by David Miller of Monmouth, Maine, Running Home N’s first victory of 2007 was his 27th lifetime win. The New Zealand import was expertly driven today by Shawn Gray – timed in 2:00.2.

Rays Dilemma A scored his second win in a row today; timed in 2:01 flat as he continues on through his final year at the raceway. Drew Campbell trains and reins the veteran pacer for owner Todd Whitney of Auburn, Maine. It was the 46th lifetime tally for the Australian-bred.

Whipper-snappers beware as there appears to be plenty of life left in these ageless wonders. They’ll continue to demonstrate their abilities all year long, while challenging the younger set at Scarborough Downs.
