Alfred Scherler, 80, dies

Columbus, OH — Alfred George Scherler, 80, of Avon, Ohio, died May 28, 2012, at Grace Hospital, Lakewood.

Mr. Scherler was born June 29, 1931, in Cleveland and had lived in Avon since 1978. He was a 1949 graduate of Lakewood High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from The Ohio State University.

From 1963 until his retirement in 1997, Mr. Scherler worked for Webber Gage, Westlake, a Division of Starrett Corporation, working as the office manager.

He was a Past Master of the Gaston G. Allen Masonic Lodge, Lakewood, serving in 1973-74 and was also a member of the Royal and Accepted Masons’ Cunningham Chapter, as well as a member of the Avon United Methodist Church.

As a child Mr. Scherler developed a passion for working with horses, an interest passed down from his father. For the past 35 years he owned and raced Standardbreds.

Mr. Scherler is survived by his wife, Kay E. (nee Kastler), whom he married June 17, 2000; daughters, Karen A. (Bill) Shannon and Carol J.; stepchildren, Dave (Linda) Badt, Dan (Rae) Badt and Linda (Rob) Hoberg; grandchildren, Kimberly and Amy Shannon, Derek and Tyler Badt and Makena and Faith Hoberg. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane C. (nee Vannorsdall); and his parents, Emil A. and Florance (nee Donberg).
