American Jewel leads 15 into Jugette

by Tom White, publicity director, the Little Brown Jug

Delaware, OH — American Jewel and Economy Terror are heavy co-favorites for the $296,050 Jugette 3-year-old filly pace on Wednesday (Sept. 19) at the Delaware County Fair.

American Jewel, 6-5 in the morning line, will start from post seven in the first eight-filly elimination and Economy Terror, at odds of 7-5, will leave from the outside post in the second seven-filly group.

Fifteen fillies will compete in two $59,210 eliminations and the top four from each elim will return for the $177,630 second heat. The winner of the second heat will be declared the winner.

Economy Terror and American Jewel finished one-two in the Dan Patch Award voting for 2-year-old filly pacer of the year in 2011.

Economy Terror, trained by Chris Oakes, has $1,230,869 in lifetime earnings and has finished first, second or third 12 times in 20 starts. The Western Terror filly will be driven by Dave Palone, who won the Jugette in 1999 with Maudlin Hanover and in 2003 with Numeric Hanover.

In her last start Economy Terror won the $200,000 Pennsylvania Sires Stakes Championship in 1:49. Economy Terror is owned by Chuck Pompey, Howard Taylor and Edwin Gold.

American Jewel, a homebred daughter of American Ideal, is owned by Brittany Farms and trained by Jimmy Takter. In 18 career starts, American Jewel has 13 firsts, four seconds and one third with a bankroll of $1,421,471.

American Jewel will be driven by Tim Tetrick.

American Jewel’s career almost ended last fall during the Grand Circuit meeting at Lexington’s Red Mile. The filly broke a P-1 bone in a sesamoid while competing in the International Stallion Stakes. She underwent surgery two days later. Dr. Larry Bramlage of Rood & Riddle Equine Clinic placed screws in the broken bone in the filly’s right hind leg. The surgery proved to be successful and American Jewel returned to action this year.

So far this season American Jewel has captured the $629,160 Fan Hanover at Mohawk and the $250,000 James Lynch Final at Pocono Downs.

Persistent (3-1) is the second choice in the first elimination heat and Angel Scent (7-2) is the second choice in the second heat.
