Pompano Beach, FL — The month long $60,000 11th annual Artsplace Pacing Series for three and four-year-olds gets underway at Pompano Park Harness Track on Monday with two divisions for the opening round.

The series features three weeks of preliminary competition followed by the $20,000 added final.

The series is named after the world champion racehorse and stallion, Artsplace, who still holds the world and track record at Pompano Park for two-year-olds of 1:511 set in the 1990 Breeders Crown.

The $6,500 first division is the fourth race, headlined by ICU Jessie from post six as the 6-5 betting favorite. In his last two starts he has raced against the best pacers on the grounds at Pompano Park and finished second and third in the Open Handicap Pace, race timed in 1:54 and 1:522. Before that the four-year-old gelding by Camluck had won two of his previous three starts, the fastest coming in a 1:524 lifetime mark. Diane Norris and Clifford Grundy of Howell, Michigan own ICU Jessie, who is trained by Gordon Norris.

The lone return winner in the field is Armed Yankee from post seven for owner/trainer Diane Helen of Pompano Beach, Florida. Driven by George Napolitano, Jr., Armed Yankee won his last start with a career best 1:543 triumph.

A real slugfest is in store for racing fans in the sixth race second Artsplace division as Brian and Ed Hauck’s Electric’s A Flyin makes his 2004 debut after a month’s rest. In his last start, Electric’s A Flyin posted a lifetime best 1:541 victory, the fifth win of the year. He starts from post seven for driver Kevin Wallis as the 3-1 second choice in the race.

The 2-1 favorite is It’s The Paper Boy from the rail for driver Bruce Ranger. Also a five time winner last season, It’s The Paper Boy has a record of 1:54 and has won three of his last five starts for the Fred Monteleone Stable of Pompano Beach, Florida.

Also of note, newcomer Ten Karot Dragon starts from post two for driver Richard Macomber, Jr. and in his debut last week he won from post 10 in 1:574.
