by John Berry, for Pompano Park

Pompano Beach, FL — Barbara Brainard, 74, died Jan. 10, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was a life partner with her husband of 55 years, Donald, and loving mother to her two children, Michele and Darry.

Her involvement in harness racing as a breeder and owner stretched over five decades as she witnessed her husband in becoming one of the nation’s leading drivers during the 1970s.

Known throughout the industry as a warm, loving, caring individual, in a interview several years ago, she said, “I get great satisfaction on seeing others achieve their potential. It does my heart so much good seeing others succeed, whether it be my Don, my children or someone else that may be enjoying a taste of success, especially when it’s not taken for granted.”

Other survivors include her brother, Robert Laughlin; grandchildren, S. Andrew and Lane; sisters-in-law, Betty Jean Calice, Candy Brady and Samantha Laughlin; nephew, Chad Calice; and nieces, Melissa Laughlin and Tracy.

While she requested no services, memorial contributions may be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance at https://ocrfa.org.
