Born in Vineland, NJ, January 18, 1936, his family moved to Pittsford when he was very young, and Barrett lived there the rest of his life. He grew up on a farm, with his father and brother as professional racehorse trainers and drivers. Barrett graduated in the first graduating class from Sutherland High School and then served in the US Air Force, where he was a B52 airplane mechanic during the Korean War. While Barrett enjoyed horse racing, he found his business passion in the automobile business, starting the very successful Central Auto Exchange, a wholesale automobile auction in Rochester.

Barrett endured a slow and painful decline since having a stroke 12 years ago, which affected his cognitive functioning, the most difficult thing to lose for such a fiercely intelligent man. He was so strong and fought hard to hold onto it, as it was slipping away. He is in a better place now. His children will miss him dearly. Among many other things, he showed them how to work hard, and that there are no boundaries to what they could achieve, and that they make their own destiny. He taught them that there will be challenges in life, but to see them as opportunities.

Barrett was predeceased by his brothers, Adrian and Jan Filer. He is survived by his sister, Evonne Filer, his two children, Ted Filer and Christina Riley; daughter-in-law, Susan Filer; grandchildren, Ford Filer (Julia), Hunter Filer, Haily Filer, Hobie Filer, Jennifer Riley, Jack Riley, and Stephanie Riley.
