Beltrami wins first 2020 GSY Series race

East Rutherford, NJ — Nine pacers went to post under chilly race conditions at The Meadowlands in the first race on the Friday (Feb. 21) card, an $11,000 GSY Series race.

As is the case in many amateur events, several horses left hard for the front as the nine horses bounded into the first turn. Scirocco Mistysaid with Mark Silva holding the lines, left for the lead along with Joe Lee aboard Preppy Art and Bob Davis driving Howmacsblackjack. They were three wide into the first turn through a quarter of :27.1.

Silva maintained the lead and forced Davis to take a seat, while Lee was left on the outer rim and the demanding half in :54.4 took its toll on two of the three speed duelers.

All the while the outer flow started to take effect and horses were going three wide around the final turn. This is when Tony Beltrami, who picked up this catch drive aboard Parklane Jet, was sitting third over and was able to make a bold move en route to a 1-1/2 length victory over Silva, who tired in deep stretch. Steuben Magic Ride, with Philip Bo Sowers, picked up the show dough. The mile went in a swift 1:52.4.

This 4-year-old gelding is by Jereme’s Jet and is owned by Terrence Smith and trained by Williams Hernandez.

The second leg of the GSY Series will take place next Friday night at the Big M. The first post is scheduled for 6:55 p.m.
