Blooded Horse Sale posts terrific opening day

Delaware, OH — Horsemen from across the country flooded into Delaware, Ohio, for the 65th annual Blooded Horse Fall Sale on Monday (Nov. 12).

The first 50 horses through the ring were purchased by buyers from 16 states. A total of 245 yearlings were featured in the opening session with bidding wars especially fierce for Ohio-breds. Some 26 yearlings sold between $10,000 and $45,000.

Ed Mullinax of Amherst, Ohio, was the leading buyer, purchasing three yearlings for $103,000, two by Feelin Friskie for $32,000 and $45,000 and a Chip Chip Hooray for $26,000. Mullinax’s trainer, Mark Ford, made the trip from New York to inspect and select the yearlings.

Trainer Jim Arledge, Jr. of Orient, Ohio, signed the ticket for five yearlings totaling $50,000.

The sale continues at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday with a total of 1,433 horses catalogued. These include 204 2-year-olds, 273 3-year-olds, 97 weanlings and hundreds of raceway horses and broodmares.

A used tack sale offering harnesses, hopples, boots, bits, halters, blankets and stable equipment is held from 8:30-9:30 a.m. each morning and after the last horse sells on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.
