Boomer Berman wins at Butler fair

by Jerry Connors

Butler, PA — The ageless trotter Boomer Berman and driver Steve Schoeffel were the heroes of the day during a five-race Saturday (June 30) card that was the third and final day of harness action at the Big Butler Fair.

Boomer Berman, an 11-year-old son of Defiant Yankee, is defiant against the ravages of time, winning in the free-for-all trot in 2:06; last year he set his divisional track record with a 2:04 score. The “Boomer,” who is now 3-3-0 in six lifetime starts at the Butler Fair and has 58 career victories in all, was trained and driven by Schoeffel for owner Thomas Barrett.

Schoeffel took three dashes on the card to run his seasonal fair total to nine, second behind Dave Brickell’s 12 at this early point in the campaign.

Brickell’s trotter JC Mik Mac Jillio will try to earn her fourth fair Sire Stake victory in as many starts this year as the Keystone Fair sulky circuit turns to Dayton, Pennsylvania next Saturday. The only other horse to go three-for-three in the first three fair Sires is another sophomore filly, the pacer She’s So, from the Ken Weaver Stable — which is based in Dayton.
