from the USTA Communications Department

Columbus, OH — Brian Bellamy, 59, a longtime driver/trainer, died Dec. 15, 2011, in Florida.

The resident of Colborne, Ontario, had 617 victories in the sulky with his mounts earning $1,580,196. Since 1991, USTA training records for Mr. Bellamy show 241 winners and purse earnings of $1,086,709.

“On the golf course last year, Brian told me one of the career accomplishments he was most proud of was winning the Pompano Park trainer’s title in 1986,” said Pompano’s publicist and announcer Frank Salive. “He was a real kind and gentlemanly guy and really well liked here. He could drive a ball 300 yards and he really loved his golf and marched to the beat of his own drummer you might say, as he really enjoyed his snowbird trainer’s life of splitting his time between Ontario and Florida.”

Mr. Bellamy was a close personal friend on the backstretch, and regular golf partner of the large Canadian contingent wintering at Pompano, including Greg Perry, Jack Darling, Wally Hennessey, Dan Hennessey, Rob Morrison and Doug Brown.

His best horse in recent years was pacer Hazel Eyes, who won in a stakes series at Pompano with Gaston Lareau in the bike, before Mr. Bellamy took him north to Ontario where he was claimed away.

Mr. Bellamy was well regarded for being able to improve horses with soundness and gaiting issues.
