When you think of Wisconsin racing, you can’t think of it unless Bruce Alexander of Westfield comes to mind. Bruce, along with his wife Mary and brother Dean Alexander, have raced throughout Wisconsin for many years. He has been instrumental in keeping racing in his hometown of Westfield. He fought hard to get racing back there after a hiatus, and without Bruce, we definitely would never be racing at Westfield.

It’s not uncommon for his stable to have $100,000-plus winners. In the late ‘90s, we saw Jolly Holiday ($115,333) come break the track record in Westfield, along with La Rapida ($125,263) going postward. In more recent history, they gave the foundation and start for their greatest prodigies — Sauce Two K ($352,520) and American Lane ($1,116,417).

Bruce co-owned an American Native trotter, Dr McDreamy, who has bankrolled almost a quarter of a million dollars and defeated the great Southern Rocketop. Dr McDreamy has won many stakes including the $105,000 Su Mac Lad while also racing in the illustrious Kentucky Futurity.

Over the years, Bruce has started colts on the Wisconsin fair circuit while still bringing back stock from Chicago in order to help fill races and support the fairs. By doing this, Bruce has garnered 10 Top Ten Pacer or Trotter awards, including 1995 Runner-Up Pacer of the Year Fox Valley Jordan. He has appeared in the Top Ten Drivers nine times, while being honored as WHHA Driver of the Year on two separate occasions (1989 and 1998).

Bruce enjoys being in the record books as he has owned, trained and/or driven nine track records throughout the Badger State, three of which still stand to this day (Darlington–Broadway Mysticism (2:05 tied) in 1997; Wautoma—Pretty Caroline (2:02); and Westfield—Dune Dame (1:59.2).

The WHHA has always been supported by Bruce as he has served 18 years on the Board of Directors (tied for third in longevity). In return, the WHHA has honored Bruce as the 1988 Horseperson of the Year as well as the 2009 recipient of the James Laird Memorial Award For Excellence.

Bruce shows no signs of slowing down as he continues to buy numerous colts each fall in hopes of getting the next champion.

In his spare time, he enjoys representing District 4B on the United States Trotting Association Board of Directors, while still finding the time to create new adventures with his wife, Mary.
