Cash N Chips seizes opportunity, wins Meadows series final

Washington, PA — Challenging on the outside when the leader jumped it off, Cash N Chips pounced on the opportunity and went on to capture Thursday’s (April 22) $22,250 final of the Margaret Provost Memorial Trot for 3-year-old fillies at The Meadows.

Treasure Gems K, the 4-5 favorite, was trotting with a clear lead through the final turn when she made an unforced break, leaving only Cash N Chips and the pocket-sitting Wonmyheart Hanover in position to score. Cash N Chips persevered for Hunter Myers and downed Wonmyheart Hanover by a half length in a career best 1:56.1, with Franklin County third.

Steve Bush trains the daughter of Cash Hall and Sugar N Chips, and shares ownership with Alvira Fassett.

In the $16,000 Open Handicap Pace, The First Step overcame a tough trip — he was caught outside twice — to prevail in 1:51.3 for Ronnie Wrenn Jr., trainer Ron Burke, and owners Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi LLC and Phillip Collura. Lyons Skipper was a neck back in second while Rock Candy completed the ticket.

The Betterthancheddar-Mery Linny Lee gelding pushed his career bankroll to $193,184 and, in the process, ended the four-race winning streak of his stablemate, Windsong Leo, who finished fourth.

Dave Palone and Mike Wilder each piloted three winners on the 13-race card.

Live racing at The Meadows continues Friday (April 23), when the 13-race program features a pair of carryovers — $3,173,33 in the final-race Super Hi-5, $768.68 in the Pick-5 (race eight). First post is 12:45 p.m.
