Casino gambling bill approved by Kentucky Senate committee

from the USTA Communications Department

Columbus, OH — The Louisville Courier-Journal is reporting that a revised version of Gov. Steve Beshear’s proposed constitutional amendment that would clear the way for casino gambling in Kentucky has won the approval of the Senate State & Local Government Committee.

As introduced, SB 151 would have allowed as many as five casinos at horse tracks and as many as two others. The revised bill says only that the legislature can authorize as many as seven casinos, with none guaranteed for tracks.

However, the revised bill also says that no casinos would be allowed within 60 miles of one of the state’s eight tracks, which would mean there’d be no Louisville casino unless Churchill Downs Inc. got a license. It also would close the Northern Kentucky market to any casino unless it were at Turfway Park.
