Charles W. ‘Bill’ Smith, dies

Columbus, OH — Charles W. “Bill” Smith, age 78, of Gambier, Ohio, passed away on Sunday (Feb. 19).

Born on Dec. 19, 1938, Smith was the son of the late George and Mamie (Shoults) Smith, who resided in Knox County.

Smith was a longtime owner/breeder/trainer/driver of Standardbreds, was a member of the United States Trotting Association and the Knox County Horsemen’s Association.

He also graduated from Gambier High School in 1956, where he starred on six-man football team. In fact, he scored 22 touchdowns as a freshman fullback.
