Clyde Burgess, Jr., 84, dies

Columbus, OH — Clyde G. Burgess, Jr., 84, died Sept. 12, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his family.

Born in Bennington, Vt., on Sept. 15, 1928, he was the son of the late Clyde Sr. and Belle (Briggs) Burgess. He received his education in the local schools and was a 1948 graduate of Bennington High School where he was a member of the Ben-Hi football team.

A Navy veteran, Mr. Burgess returned to Bennington following his discharge to join the family business, Burgess Brothers Construction. He was associated with the business for more than 50 years and served as company president for 40 years until the time of his retirement.

Mr. Burgess was an avid horseman and trained and drove Standardbreds at many racetracks in the area.

Very active in the community for many years, he served nine years on the Mt. Anthony Union School Board and was a member of American Legion Post 13, Knights of Columbus Council 307, Bennington Elks Lodge and Bennington Moose Lodge 1233.

Mr. Burgess is survived by his significant other, Ingrid Walker; daughters, Peggy Sauer-Gagnon (John) and Penny; grandchildren, Laura Peterson, Russell (Leah) Peterson, Glen (Nicole) Sauer and their sons, Jack and James, Gregory Sauer (fiance Sharon Klauser) and Geoffrey Sauer and his daughter, Harper; Ingrid’s son, John Walker and his daughter, Haley; niece, Gloria Jean Sausville; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, James Sauer; and a sister, Lorraine (Clyde) Howe.
