Cooper wins again at Northfield

Northfield, OH — The remarkable story of Cooper the harness horse continued Wednesday night (Aug. 21) as he trotted to his seventh consecutive victory at Northfield Park.

The 6-year-old gelding who retired winless in 2015 because he was too slow, had since been pulling an Amish buggy in Sugarcreek, Ohio until this spring when then owner, Homer Stutzman, believed his smooth stride on the road might also work on the racetrack.

Cooper was sold to owner-trainer Firman Troyer who has conditioned the son of Kadabra to his winning streak, all at Northfield.

In Wednesday night’s race, Cooper rallied from third to draw clear to a 2-1/2 length decision, trotting his mile in 1:56.3. The fan favorite paid $2.10 for a $2 wager, or a 10-cent profit. Of the $16,815 bet in the win pool, $14,384 was wagered on Cooper.

He earned $4,000 for his efforts and has now banked $24,700 in less than three months of racing.
