Dover, DE — Crossfire N, last season’s Horse of the Meet, continued her new found renaissance, scoring a 1:53 victory in the $27,000 Mares Open Handicap Pace on Tuesday, April 19 at Dover Downs. Brad Hanners broke the six-year-old track record for wins in one season by scoring a driving triple.

Crossfire N was a winner in the Tuesday feature at Dover.

Since early March, Crossfire N, owned by Wendy Crissman and 49 Racing Stables, with Mike Cole driving, has won four times with three seconds, including the runner-up role to Rainbow Blue in the previous week’s $50,000 Mares Invitational. The six-year-old Son Of Afella mare has now won $99,880 this year.

Crossfire N took the lead at the start and led throughout, but had to be sharp to do it. Clock Watcher, with Tim Curtin, challenged on the backstretch with Tawny and Brad Hanners right behind. In the stretch Crossfire N held off House Flight (Jim Morand), who had stalked the winner from the start and rolled along the passing lane to secure second place. Ross Wolfenden got Cams Little Imp N in high gear in the lane and closed boldly to finish a close-up third.

In the $18,000 Mares Winners Over Pace, Roger Plante rushed Seasin along the passing lane to nip Roses Best (Toby Lynch) at the wire in 1:52.4. Hasty Dewar (Kevin Sizer) cut the mile and held on for third. It was the fifth win in 13 starts for the eight-year-old Mergers Cousin mare, also owned and trained by Plante.

Brad Hanners was honored in the winner’s circle after breaking the track record for most victories in one season.

Brad Hanners broke the all-time track record for dash wins in one season by making three stops in the winner’s circle. Ironically, Hanner’s 248th milestone win came driving Winning Connection, a horse he trains for his wife, Alicia. The previous record was held by Luc Ouellette, who won 247 races at the track in the 1998-1999 season.

Hanners other two winners were The Cheyenne Gang’s Cheyenne Ryan, who posted a 1:57 score in a $7,000 three and four-year-old pace and Webb Racing Stable’s 11-year-old veteran Viressa, a winner of a $12,500 Delaware claiming allowance in 1:55.

JoAnn King’s Lucille A, after three straight thirds, finally made the winner’s circle with Jim King at the controls for a 1:53 victory in a $12,500 Filly and Mare Pace. My Miss C’s Hero (Ross Wolfenden) was next with Mrs Tricky (Jim Morand) the show horse.

George Dennis moved to within four of the 4,000 win club, piloting Forrest Bartlett’s Marlars Trump Card along the passing lane in 1:54.1 to win a $25,000 claiming allowance. Bust Out (Daryl Bier) finished second with Dudley Death Drop (Kevin Sizer) third.

North America’s leading all-time dash-winning driver Herve Filion piloted 13-1 Second Hand News, a three-year-old altered son of Indiana stallion Pathway To Victory, to his first win for owners Beatrice Miller and Virginia Duke. Second Hand News closed along the passing lane to score a 1:58.4 victory in a $9,000 Delaware Trot. Ragland Andy (Jim King) finished second, beaten a nose.
