Currier & Ives exhibit to return to Museum

from the Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame

Goshen, NY — After a hugely successful European tour lasting nearly three years, a module of the Harness Racing Museum’s free traveling exhibit, “The Story of Harness Racing by Currier & Ives” will soon be back home.

The exhibit appeared at the Nordiska Travmuseet, Solvalla and Jagersro Racetracks in Sweden, and the Musee du Trot in Grosbois, France, entertaining and educating our European harness racing friends and fans with its delightful images depicting the early days of our American-born pastime.

Special thanks go out to European sponsor Margareta Wallenius-Kleberg of Menhammer Stuteri, Ekero, Sweden, for making the tour such a success and for taking such good care of the Museum’s precious artwork.

The Museum’s traveling exhibits “The Story of Harness Racing by Currier & Ives” and the “What is Harness Racing?” Poster Series are available at no cost for hosting by museums, art galleries, libraries, race tracks and all appropriate venues. To be considered, venues must have appropriate wall space, security, and climate-control. Host applicants are considered on a first come, first served basis, so if you are interested in hosting either of the exhibits — or can suggest any appropriate venues in your area — please contact the Museum as soon as you can.

A Reminder: The Museum is actively seeking interested parties to underwrite the award-winning traveling exhibit “A Drive to Win.” The project provides a unique opportunity for sponsors to identify with the sport by partnering with the Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame to promote and celebrate their passion for and commitment to the sport of the Standardbred through this very special traveling exhibit. For more information please contact Museum Director Gail Cunard at 845.294.6330.

Several new titles of vintage harness racing books are now available through the Museum’s Winner’s Circle gift shop. Included are Gentleman Joe: The Story of Harness Driver Joe O’Brien by Marie Hill (1975), Immortal John Hervey’s Messenger: The Great Progenitor (1935), The Trotting Horse of America: How to Train and Drive Him by Immortal Hiram Woodruff (1874) and Hamilton Busbey’s The Trotting and Pacing Horse in America (1904).

The Museum’s Peter Haughton Research Library is always happy to receive donations of used books and magazines relating to harness racing or the Standardbred horse. If your donation is not in our collection, it will be added to the Museum’s research resources. If it is a third copy of a title we already have, we will make it available for sale. This ongoing project is extremely important, as proceeds from the sale of used books and magazines by the Museum go towards the rebinding and restoration of older volumes and the acquisition of new ones for the library.

Visit the Museum gift shop at www.harnessmuseum.com/giftshop.htm and browse through all the used books and periodicals we have to offer.

The Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame is located at 240 Main Street in Goshen, New York, and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (last tour 4 p.m.) Thanks to USTA support the Museum is currently offering free admission for walk-in visitors and $4.00/person for group docent-guided tours.
