Currier & Ives lecture at the Harness Racing Museum

from the Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame

Goshen, NY — The name Currier & Ives is nearly synonymous with romantic winter sleighing scenes and idyllic views of 19th century American life. The company described itself as “Printmakers to the People” and produced approximately 7,500 lithographs. The trotting sport was the country’s first national pastime and is well represented in the Currier & Ives catalog with hundreds of depictions of horses, sulkies and sleighs.

Join the Harness Racing Museum’s collections curator Rebecca Howard and education artist Kristin Roberts for an entertaining presentation on the history of New York’s Currier & Ives Company, the lithography process and a hands-on opportunity to explore the joys of coloring. The Lunch & Learn Lecture will take place on Tuesday (Nov. 24) from 12-2 p.m.

As today’s growing market in coloring books for adults would attest, the activity may seem new, but it is a much older art. You need not be an artist to enjoy the interplay of color and companionship that this afternoon promises; water color pencils and other materials will be provided to participants.

Tickets for the Lunch & Learn Lecture are $18 for museum members and $20 for non-members and include a hot Thanksgiving-style buffet meal lunch with soft drinks and dessert, as well as the art supplies. Reservations are required by Friday (Nov. 20) and because of anticipated interest please call 845.294.6330 early to secure your place at the table.
