Dale Ross 71, dies

Columbus, OH — Dale E. Ross, 71, of Vienna, Ohio, died Dec. 17, 2011, at the Cleveland Clinic.

He was born November 21, 1940, in Warren, Ohio, the son of Jerry E. and Roma Mascio Ross.

After following in his brother Jerry’s footsteps he became a lifetime horseman, with career driving earnings of $2,462,136 and 727 wins. He owned, drove and trained many exceptional horses racing in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.

His most memorable was Momentum, a career winner of $477,779. In 1975 Momentum time trialed in Lexington with Joe O’Brien. The initial quarter was :29.4, but Momentum paced home in 1:54.1, which at the time was the third fastest ever.

Mr. Ross is survived by his son, Wesley; daughter, Melonie DiBell; stepson Chris Leach; three grandchildren; sister, Nancy Lucik; and brother, Don E. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jerry and Gene; and a granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements were handled by Cleveland Clinic.
