Davis takes event at Monticello

Monticello, NY — A field of seven went to post over the sloppy half-mile Monticello oval and the final, like many other amateur races had the usual speed duel from the start.

Bob Davis, driving Howmacsblackjack, from his two-hole position left hard for the lead and was not going to let any horses by as the field bounded down the back stretch the first time. Vaganova, driven by Christopher Doherty, also left hard from the three post but could not gain the top spot and was forced to take back into the pocket as the first quarter came up in a quick:28.2 over the off surface.

They were followed by Bettor Reason N, with Joe Lee holding the lines, and he made his move as the field headed to the half mile stanza. Davis was able to get a nice :30.3 second quarter breather, and this proved to be the winning move as he was able to stave off Lee for his half-mile charge and was victorious by two lengths.

Lee held on to second while Doherty rounded out the trifecta. The mile was timed in a fast 1:57.1, even with a track variant of -2. He picked up a nice purse check for his owner($7,000 purse) and his backers at the windows were happy that all $2 win investors, collected $12.40, almost double of what he paid last week. The 7-year-old gelding is owned by Bill Reepmeyer LLC and trained by Lisa Zabielski.

The GSY Series will continue its circuit next week back at The Meadowlands and a new series will start soon thereafter at Monticello Raceway.
