Dorothy Gibides, 81, dies

Columbus, OH — On January 10, 2012 Dorothy Gibides, 81, of Jamesville, passed away Tuesday at Iroquois Nursing Home after a brief but courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Born in Syracuse, she was a graduate of Vocational High School and attended Onondaga Community College. She previously worked for Crucible Steel and Onondaga County.

Dorothy’s life revolved around her five children and she and her husband were harness horse owners and breeders.

She was a very active member of Onondaga Harness Horseman’s Association and a communicant of St. James Church. Dorothy is survived by her husband of over 50 years, Nicholas; daughters, Karen M. Gibides of Centerville, MA and Susan A. Gibides of Carolina Beach, NC; sons, Nicholas J. (Heidi) of Marietta, GA, Daniel C. (Betsy) of Oak Island, NC and Chris J. of Syracuse; sisters, Frances (Raymond) Scouten of Fairmount, Virginia (James) Cheevers of Solvay and Joan “Jane” Dyer of Onondaga Hill; brother, Richard (Elia) McClusky of Solvay; and seven grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Helen Montreal.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, 8:30 a.m. at Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, Syracuse and 9 a.m. in St. James Church, 4845 S. Salina Street, Syracuse where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will be in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
