Dr. Charles Ream dies

Columbus, OH — Dr. Charles R. Ream, 84, of Jensen Beach, Fla., formerly of Washington, Pa., died April 20, 2013, with his family by his side at the Donnell House.

He was born on Oct. 3, 1928, in Johnstown, Pa., the son of the late Robert Kimmell Ream and the late Mary Augusta Schiffhauer Ream. Dr. Ream, better known as Chuck or Coach to his former athletes, graduated from Johnstown High School. He received his Bachelor’s in Biology and Physical Education at the University of Pittsburgh, as well as his Masters and Doctorate. He was also a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.

While at Pitt, he worked at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Blind and coached wrestling and track. His coaching career began at Wilkinsburg High School where he coached football. Shortly thereafter he became the football, wrestling and lacrosse coach at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., where he coached two All American lacrosse players. He was then hired as head football and track coach at Washington and Jefferson College in 1960, where he brought the first PAC championship to the college in 1970.

He is a member of the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame as well as the Washington and Jefferson Sports Hall of Fame.

After a successful career as a coach, he was hired as Chairman of the Education Department at Washington and Jefferson where he remained until his retirement in 1992.

While he was coaching, he researched interval training of equine athletes and in order to do so he obtained his trainer’s license with the United States Trotting Association while working with horses at the Beinhauer and Cameron Stables at the Meadows. He subsequently was published in Hoof Beats magazine for his work.

He is survived by his wife, the former Marian Cover; daughter, Cynthia Ream Phillips; son, Steven; grandchildren, Ashley, Joseph, Marian and John Phillips; brothers, James (Phyllis) and David (Sibyl); brother-in-law, Edwin P. (Margie) Cover; and several nephews and nieces.

There will be no public visitation and services will be private. Condolences may be sent to the family at 67 LeMoyne Ave., Washington, PA 15301.
