Dr. M. Paul Simon, 88, dies

Manalapan, NJ — Dr. M. Paul Simon, 88, of Short Hills, N.J., a family physician in Lake Hiawatha and a horseman for 48 years, died Jan. 2, 2011.

Dr. Simon, a USTA member since 1962, was an owner, trainer and driver. He campaigned his horses under the nom de course of Lord & Lady Stables Inc. and many of his horses carried the Lord or Lady in their names, including Lord Stacey and Lord Simon. Some of his other top horses were Tar Hal, Liane’s Pride, Speedwin, and Foxy Valla.

He was stabled at Gaitway Farms in Englishtown, N.J. for the last 25 years and raced his horses in New Jersey, New York, Delaware and Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey.

Dr. Simon was beloved by many horsemen for whom he provided medical care and friendship.

“Doc was truly the kindest, sweetest man I’ve ever known,” said Karen Fagliarone, the racing secretary at Freehold Raceway. “He has touched so many people’s lives.”

Freehold Raceway will salute Doc Simon on Saturday (Jan. 8).

Funeral services will take place on Tuesday (Jan. 4) at 11:15 a.m. at the Menorah Chapels at Millburn, 2950 Vauxhall Road, Vauxhall, NJ.
