DuPont Davis, 63, dies

Columbus, OH — DuPont L. Davis, 63, died March 25, 2010.

Mr. Davis was born Aug. 23, 1946, to the late Jacobia and Blannie Davis in St. John, N.C. He was educated through the Hertford County Public School System and graduated from R.L. Vann High School in 1965. He furthered his education by attending Chowan College. He joined Zion Grove Baptist Church at an early age and was a past trustee.

He worked at Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company, Alamac Knitting Company, Reynolds Funeral Home and the Naval Shipyard. He became an entrepreneur in 1972 by establishing the Davis Burial Vault Company. He was a dedicated Hertford County Commissioner for more than 21 years and was past president of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners. He served on various committees throughout the county and state.

Mr. Davis was a longtime member of the USTA and held a Presiding Juge-Fair license.

He is survived by his wife, Earline Powell Davis; sons, Derrick (Keisha) and Dexter; daughters, Donica (Billy) Thompson and Dedria (Chris) Davis-King; seven grandchildren; sisters, Joyce Smith, Sylvia (Roosevelt) Bazemore, Christine (Charles) Durham and Sherry (Dwight) Ransome; brothers, Oswald (Essie), John (Vivian) and Dwight; and mother-in-law, Millie Powell.
