Tuesday’s (Sept. 8) edition of Fair Roundup features a results story from the Port Royal (PA) Fair.

Freshmen in action at Port Royal

Port Royal, PA — The Port Royal Speedway in Juniata County, Pa., opened its annual two-day harness meet on Tuesday night under the lights with 2-year-olds in action.

Southwind Nitro, by SJ’s Caviar, opened the meet with a 2:02.3 victory in the PA Sire Stake for 2-year-old colt trotters. Owned by Susan Daugherty and trained/driven by Bill Daugherty, Southwind Nitro set a new lifetime mark, winning for the fourth time this year. In the second $6,348 division, Abundasass was a 2:06 winner for trainer/driver Syl King, Jr. Owned by John and Leslie Ducharme, the gelding is a son of Abundance.

In the first 2-year-old filly trot for state-breds, Rosey Chick was a winner in 2:04.1 for trainer/driver Dave Brickell. Owned by Jack and Sharon Claypoole, Rosey Chick (SJ’s Caviar) set a new lifetime mark and earned her fifth win in 14 starts. The second filly trotting split was won by Dr. William Solomon’s Caviar’s Dancer and trainer/driver Jamie Coffy. It was the second win in three days for the SJ’s Caviar filly, equaling the time she trotted at Stoneboro on Sunday, 2:05. The final filly trot was won by Keystone Fling (Donerail), who went wire-to-wire for trainer/driver Steve Schoeffel. Owned by Stephen Lander and Virginia and Kathy Schoeffel, Keystone Fling trotted the mile in 2:06.

Luscious Al (Arturo), owned, trained and driven by Roger Hammer, won the first PASS colt pacing event in 2:03. It was the ninth win in 16 starts on the year for Luscious Al. In the second frosh colt pace, Straight Character won for owner Bob Krenitsky, Jr. and driver Dave Brickell, pacing in a life-best 2:01.2. Bob Krenitsky, Sr. trains the Shady Character colt. The final colt pacing event was won by McDickerson, who set a new track record for 2-year-old pacing colts, covering the mile in 1:58.4. Owned by Randy and Cliff Neal, McDickerson (McArdle) was driven to victory by Eric Neal.

The first filly pacing group was led across the wire by Wicked Native, a daughter of Allamerican Native. The winning time was 2:02.2, a new lifetime mark for the filly, owned by Roger Hammer and Vicki Fair. Hammer trains and was in the bike. Hammer returned to win the second filly pace, guiding My Gal Mykenna to her seventh win of the year in 2:02.2. Owned by Hammer along with Nevin Gilbert, My Gal Mykenna is a daughter of Real Artist. The night’s final Sire Stake was won by another Hammer filly, Anxiety Hanover (The Panderosa), as she covered the mile in 2:03.1.

In the lone division of the 2-year-old Quaker Pace, Metro Man scored in a life-best 2:04 for driver Chris Shaw. Owned by trainer Jason Shaw in partnership with Amanda Beinhauer, Metro Man (Allamerican Ingot) has now won three of 16 starts.

The final race of the night, the 2-year-old Quaker Trot, was won by Redoakswillynilly, a Go Get Lost colt. Owned, trained and reined by Syl King, Jr., the colt covered the mile in 2:06.4.

Three-year-olds will be in action at Port Royal on Wednesday afternoon. Post time is 1 p.m.
