Fair Roundup: Racing opens in Wauseon

Saturday’s (Sept. 5) edition of Fair Roundup features results stories from the Fulton County (OH) and Geauga County (OH) Fairs.

Racing opens in Wauseon

Wauseon, OH — The Fulton County Fair in Wauseon, Ohio, opened its three-day race meet with six races on Saturday afternoon.

Chuck Campbell’s CC Dancer (Trainforthefuture-Attitude Dance) won the first division of the 2-year-old filly trot in 2:03.4. Greg Bateson drove the filly with Rob Harmon doing the training. The second split went to Ilikeher Charm (Ilooklikemymom-Charmin) in 2:03.3. Larry Rheinheimer is the filly’s trainer-driver with Mike Collins paying the expenses.

Cruisin N Surfin (Yankee Cruiser-Channel Surfer) captured the lone division of the 2-year-old filly pace in 2:00.1. Don Currier, Jr. drove the Bill Webb-trained filly for D and K Stables LLC.

Super Stakes contested in Burton

Burton, OH — There were nine Buckeye Super Stakes on the Saturday afternoon card at the Great Geauga County Fair.

The Super Stakes got underway in the first race with the 3-year-old pacing fillies. Kurt Sugg guided the favorite Amazing Towner (Towner’s Big Guy) to a two length victory. It was her sixth win in a row for trainer Marty Wollam.

In the second race for 3-year-old filly trotters, Parris Island continued her winning ways by wiring the field. It was her third win in a row and she trotted the mile in 2:08. Don McKirgan was in the sulky for trainer Charlie Myrick.

There were two divisions for 2-year-old colt trotters. In the first division, Count Dracula (Full Count) went wire-to-wire for driver/trainer Marty Wollam. The colt trotted the mile in 2:06.2. In the $3,609 second division,favorite Victory Caller (Victory Sam) covered the mile in 2:10 with Don McKirgan in the bike.

Osborne’s Yankee recorded the fastest mile of the day with a 2:00.3 score in the 3-year-old colt pace.

In the $4,768 Buckeye Super Stakes for 2-year-old filly pacers, Amtrust Bank (Mantacular) took the lead in the stretch and won her first race of the year. Tye Loy drove the winner for trainer Mark Deaton.

In the 3-year-old colt trot, Mom’s Looker (Ilooklikemymom) covered the mile in 2:05.3 with Russell Swartz getting the catch drive. It was the third win of the day for trainer Marty Wollam.

Osborne’s Yankee (Yankee Cruiser) recorded the fastest mile of the day in the 3-year-old colt pace. He tripped the beam in 2:00.3 with Kurt Sugg in the bike. Osborne’s Yankee now has seven wins on the year for trainer Eric Hamlet and he has bankrolled more than $25,000 in 14 2009 starts.

Dashing Daniel (Yankee Cruiser) dashed out of the six hole to wire the field in the 2-year-old colt pace. It was his first win in five career starts. William Irvine steered his way to the winner’s circle in 2:03.1 for trainer Mark Deaton. It was Deaton’s third victory of the day.

In the final Buckeye Super Stake race of the day, Anastasia Whinnie (Full Count) went gate-to-wire for driver/trainer Jeff Conger. The 2-year-old filly trotter covered the mile in 2:09 for her third victory in six starts.
