Feature race draws high-end mixed bag

from the Meadowlands Publicity Department

East Rutherford, NJ — A mix of eight high-end claimers and invitational pacers will do battle in a $35,000 winners over $25,000 event, the featured tenth race on Saturday night at the Meadowlands.

Off his victory in the same class last week, Mypanmar has been installed as the slight 5-2 morning line favorite. Knocking at the door after two seconds is millionaire Casimir Camotion, rated 3-1 from post two.

“I’m very happy with him,” said Bruce Saunders, who recently took over the training of the six-year-old gelding for M&M Harness Racing LLC of Nanuet, New York. “He’s hit the board in each of the four starts since we’ve had him. I’ve always known him to be a top, top performer, and he hasn’t disappointed me one bit.”

This will be Casimir Camotion’s 75th career start. He has a record of 23 wins, 15 seconds and 13 thirds, earning $1,082,972. He has seven sub-1:50 miles to his credit and his two biggest wins were the $708,400 Canadian Pacing Derby in 2004 and the $201,000 Allerage Farm Pace in 2005.

Although he may lack a knockout blow, Spirit Of A Shark has been consistent, finishing no worse than third in his five starts this year. Lifetime, he has 11 wins, eight seconds and nine thirds from 54 starts, banking $283,660 for the partnership of Cliff Siegel and John Fodera, both of Staten Island, New York, and two from Brooklyn, Herbert Siegel and Lee Wasserman.

“His back class is there,” said trainer Ken Rucker of Spirit Of A Shark, rated 9-2 in the morning line. “It’s coming back to him. Last week he closed in :25.4. I think that was the fastest quarter of the night. He’s a horse who can do it whichever way you ask him to. I’m looking forward to seeing how he can do this year. He’s got a lot of ability.”

Armbro Acquire is one of those horses who float between the high-end claiming ranks and upper echelon condition events. He has earned more than $50,000 since he was claimed on December 10, 2005 for $98,000 by David Scharf of New York City, Lightning 5 Racing Stable of Plainview, New York, Shoot The Moon Stable of Yonkers, New York and Meadow Vernon Stable of Great Neck, New York.

“He’s been a nice claim for us,” acknowledged Eric Ledford, who will drive the six-year-old gelding, who drew the rail and is 5-1 in the morning line. “We (knew) he was a high level horse, not one that can go with the best but one who pays his way at this level of the upper claimers. He loves to pass horses in the stretch, and you can see he’s been first or second in his last four starts. We’re quite happy with him.”

Lifetime, Armbro Acquire has 13 wins, 21 seconds and 11 thirds from 82 starts and earnings of $479,097.

Armbor Becalm, rated 12-1 in the morning line, has a win in three starts this year. The Mark Ford trainee is owned by J&J Como Jr. Inc. of Towaco, New Jersey.

“He’s a good one for Mark Ford,” said driver Ron Pierce. “I don’t think anyone else can touch Mypanmar right now. This is a different level for (Armbro Becalm) than the one he won at two starts back, a big difference. But he’s got some ‘go’ to him.”

Pacific Renegade, who was sick last week, rejoins the class. The Tom Fanning trainee, owned by Joseph Smith of New Vernon, New Jersey, has three wins and a second in six starts this year.

“He was coughing in the middle of the week last week, and I thought it best not to race him,” Fanning said of the decision to scratch last week.

Miss Wisconsin prepping for more titles

Miss Wisconsin, the 2005 Merrie Annabelle winner, is prepping for her 2006 campaign with trainer Ron Gurfein.

“Miss Wisconsin has come back better than expected,” said Gurfein. “She was sore at the end of last year. It was a long year for her. I actually told the owners, who had a good deal for her, to sell earlier this year. But it fell through. She’s bigger and stronger, and I’m looking forward to her season. The babies are doing good. Make Your Mind has come back well.”

Miss Wisconsin, a daughter of Muscles Yankee — Classical Beth, had five wins, one second and four thirds from 14 starts last year at two, banking $395,074 for the Miss Wisconsin Stable of Old Forge, Pennsylvania.
