Field set for Friday’s King Pace at Freehold

Freehold, NJ — A field of eight, all with African-American drivers, will go to post on Friday, Jan. 15, in the second annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Pace at Freehold Raceway. Carded as the fifth race, the event has drawn drivers from New Jersey, New York and Delaware.

Racing secretary Karen Fagliarone said, “I think this is a nice way for Freehold Raceway to pay tribute to the memory of the great civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King.”

The participating drivers from Delaware include Montrell Teague, George Polk, Jr. and Deshawn Sample, who won the inaugural edition last year. Coming in from New York are General Washington, Jr., along with his son, Cedric Washington, and Don Simmonds. Locally represented are Yogi Sheridan and Dennis Watson.

The fifth is a $4,000 claimer and carries a purse of $3,000 with Devil’s Grin being installed as the 3-1 morning line favorite with 19-year- old up and coming driving talent Montrell Teague in the driver’s seat.

The field for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Pace, from the rail out (with drivers and morning line odds): Devil’s Grin, Montrell Teague, 3-1; Born To Win, General Washington, Jr., 8-1; Ohoka Qtee N, Don Simmonds, 5-1; Flashy Boy, Dennis Watson, 9-2; Uncle Daddy, George Polk, Jr. 7-2; Sharp Diamond, Deshawn Sample, 12-1; Four Starz Coin, Yogi Sheridan, 6-1; and Mo Mo Munny, Cedric Washington, 10-1.

The first race post on Friday is set for 12:30 p.m. Freehold’s live racing continues on Saturday and a special holiday card will be offered on Monday.
