First State FFA field is profiled

Harrington, DE — Here’s a closer look at the field for Monday’s (May 29) $150,000 First State Free-for-All at Harrington Raceway.

1 – SPIRIT OF A SHARK (3-1, Catello Manzi) — Co-holds the fastest win time of any horse this year with a mark of 1:48.4 set at the Meadowlands. He is also the only horse in the field to have won in less than 1:50 more than once in 2006. His trainer, Carl Cito, Jr., won the inaugural version of this race, when it was known as the Harrington Handicap with Mighty Khan N.

2 – PACIFIC RENEGADE (10-1, Yannick Gingras) — Won a leg of the Four Leaf Clover (Meadowlands) earlier in the year, and the New Jersey Sires Stakes and Mountain Skipper (Rockingham) series as a 3-year-old. Set a lifetime mark of 1:49.1 at the Meadowlands last year as a 4-year-old. Has faced stakes competition and free-for-all caliber horses throughout his career. One of two horses sired by Cam’s Card Shark in the field.

3 – WINFALL NASTY (5-1, John Campbell) — One of three 4-year-olds in the field, he is the only horse this year to win four consecutive races at the Meadowlands in top-level conditioned company. His lifetime mark of 1:49.2 came in his last start on May 20. He has Canadian-roots and started his racing career racing on half-mile tracks such as Western Fair in Ontario.

4 – MALTESE ARTIST (7-2, Dave Palone) — Won his last race in 1:49.2 at the Meadowlands and was at one point rated the #1 horse in North America in 2005. A winner of nearly $700,000 lifetime, $463,000 of it came last year, when he won the Magical Mike (Delaware, OH), the Beckwith (Plainridge), the Dan Patch (Hoosier), the Battle of Lake Erie (Northfield) and the Four Leaf Clover (Meadowlands). His trainer is having a career year at the Meadowlands.

5 – RODDY’S BAGS AGAIN (4-1, David Miller) — The only locally owned horse in the field, owned by Bob Messick and trained by local conditioner Tim Torbert, Roddy’s Bags Again has campaigned against the top free-for-allers all year. He won a leg of the Spring Championship at Woodbine in 1:50.4 and came back to win a 4-Year-Old Open two weeks later in 1:50.2. As a 3-year-old he won the Matron final at Dover as well as several legs of the Pennsylvania Sires Stakes. The leading money earner in 2006 in the field.

6 – LANDMARK HALL (8-1, George Brennan) — Set a lifetime best of 1:48.4 two starts back at the Meadowlands, which equals the fastest win time of any horse in the field. A winner of nearly $600,000 lifetime, he’s the only horse in the field that has earned most of his money racing in the claiming ranks for the bulk of his career. He is the only horse in the field that has previously raced at Harrington.

7 – ALL OVER THE PLACE (6-1, Ron Pierce) — This top 4-year-old has raced against top competition all year and set a lifetime best of 1:50 on May 6 at the Meadowlands. He was one of the fastest 3-year-olds last year with a mark of 1:50.1 at Stampede Park. He’s finished on the board in 24 of 44 lifetime starts and has been one of the top 4-year-olds in North America this year.

8 – STONEBRIDGE GALAXY (12-1, Tony Morgan) — One of the top horses on the Canadian circuit, this 5-year-old set his lifetime mark on April 22 at Woodbine with a 1:49.3 victory. He also won in 1:49.4 as a 4-year-old. A winner of nearly $500,000 lifetime, he is the only Canada-based horse in the field. His trainer, Rick Zeron, is currently in Sweden to race in the prestigious Elitlopp.
