Florida Boy romps in Florida Sunshine Stakes

Pompano Beach, Florida – September 10, 2005 – Florida Boy romped to a seven and one-quarter length victory in capturing his division of the Florida Sunshine Stakes for three-year-old colt and gelding pacers at Pompano Park Saturday. The time of 1:54.1 was Florida Boy’s fastest mile ever and his 11th victory in 13 career starts.

There were five divisions of the series for state-sired two and three-year-old pacers Saturday.

DONTPASSDAMUSTARD and driver Bruce Ranger breeze to a 1:54.2 lifetime mark in winning a division of the Florida Sunshine Stakes for three-year-old colts Saturday at Pompano Park.

Three lead changes started out in the first division as Bloom’s Beautylo (Steve Trites) was first in front, giving way by the opening quarter mile to Fish Bait (John Kakaley) who then had to give up the front before the half mile to Scootin Bayou (Daryl Bier).

All the while, driver Jay Sears and Florida Boy waited in last place, then came first-over and by the three-quarters looked Scootin Bayou in the eye and passed on by. Tyz Knights (Walter Ross, Jr.) came up the rail for second place with Scootin Bayou third.

It was the third straight win for Florida Boy, who is trained by Kim Sears and owned by Brian and Jay Sears of Deerfield Beach.

In the $5,818 2nd race second division of the Sunshine Stakes for three-year-olds, Dontpassdamustard ($3.00) and driver Bruce Ranger took command by the opening quarter mile and never looked back, winning by two and one-quarter lengths in 1:54.2. Stylish Guy (Wally Hennessey) was second with Sci Fi (Terry Morgan) third.

It was the first win this year for Dontpassdamustard and a lifetime mark for the son of Mean Mr Mustard, who is trained by Veral Bowman and co-owned with Frank and Inge Smith of Deerfield Beach.

There were three divisions of the Sunshine Stakes for two-year-old pacing colts and geldings and the fastest winner on the night was I’ve Got The Power ($2.8) and driver Wally Hennessey in 1:57.1. After taking the lead away from Tropic Motion (John Kakaley) at the half mile, I’ve Got The Power held the field at bay and won by two and one-quarter lengths. Tropic Motion was second with Scoot To Victory (Mickey McNichol) third.

It was the fifth win in six career starts for I’ve Got The Power and a lifetime mark for the son of Signed ‘n Sealed. He is trained by Michile Lorenzo and owned by the Keisers Oberman Stables and Rod Lorenzo.

Lover Boy Le Ru ($2.10) and driver Wally Hennessey) traded the early lead with Ten Times Wanted (Robert Williams, Jr.) before taking command for good by the half mile and then just held off his rival to win by a neck in 1:58.1. Ribera (Veral Bowman) was third. It was the third straight win for Lover Boy Le Ru, who is trained by Jim McDonald for owner Del Mac Tavish, Jr., of De Leon Springs.

In the 5th race third division, Remaxx Man ($4.20) and driver Bruce Ranger led from start to finish, winning by one-quarter of a length in 1:58.2 over the pocket-sitting Welcome Lover (Daryl Bier) and Letthemagicbegin (Marc Aubin.)

It was the third win for Remaxx Man, a son of Raging Glory, trained by Tom Beckette and owned by the Thunder & Lightning Farms of Parkland.

Trackman Randy Dawson’s new oval was razor sharp as Rickards Ed ($2.60) took the lead by the opening quarter mile for driver John Kakaley and rolled to a 1:52 triumph by three and one-quarter lengths in the 9th race Open Handicap Pace. It was the fastest mile of the new meet and the second straight win and 12th victory of the year for the seven-year-old gelding by Camluck. M G Ravageur (Bruce Ranger) was second with Armbro Aviator (Tom Sells) third.
