Foiled Again nips Captaintreacherous in qualifier

by Nick Salvi, for Meadowlands Racing & Entertainment

East Rutherford, NJ — Captaintreacherous vs. Foiled Again led the Friday (May 23) qualifying parade at The Meadowlands.

They left the gate with Matt Kakaley insisting on the lead with Foiled Again from post one and Captaintreacherous taking a tuck around the first turn. That order continued through fractions of :28, :56.4 and 1:25.1 when Foiled Again drifted into the two or three path as they turned for home and Tim Tetrick steered Captaintreacherous though on the inside as they sprinted home in :26.1.

Foiled Again held sway to the wire in the 1:51.2 mile. Both horses were quite willing and encouraged only by the spirit of the competition. It’s going to be a fun summer watching these two and the rest of the top older horses square off.

Overall, conditions were fair for the qualifiers held under overcast skies with little wind and temperatures in the mid 60s, the track fast.

The enigmatic Quick Deal had to get a flat line after a pair of gate breaks and he did so in 1:54 with Kakaley in to drive some Burke horses with Yannick Gingras abroad for Sunday’s Elitlopp.

Quick Deal has spotted top trotters considerable ground a number of times with his antics and gone some incredible uncharted fractions in pursuit of the field in those races. He barely raised a sweat today. Boadicea Hanover, also from the Burke barn with Scott Zeron driving, tracked the winner and was a good second.

Creatine made his seasonal debut this morning for trainer Bobby Stewart. The 2013 Kentucky Futurity winner was strong riding along in the pocket behind Celebrity Secret through easy numbers, then responded willingly when Mike Lachance tipped him out in the stretch to win by a length in 1:54.3/:28. Celebrity Secret went a good mile and held the place over a closing Money On My Mind.

The talented sophomore pacing filly Gallie Bythe Beach flashed a glimpse of what she’s capable of with a 1:52.2/:26.4 off by herself for John Campbell. She is the result of mating the champion mare of a decade ago Galleria to the current king of pacing sires Somebeachsomewhere and she’s the goods. Jim Campbell trains her for Jules Siegel’s Fashion Farms.

Two from Tony Alagna’s fleet of sophomore pacing colts sprinted home together in :27 on the end of a 1:53 mile with Ideal Magic and Tetrick edging Journeyman and Zeron. They both looked sharp in preparation for upcoming stakes engagements. Lord Of Misrule was a closing third as the Antonacci stable made its first appearance of the spring.

Live racing returns Friday night at 7:15 p.m. with the New Jersey Sires Stakes trotters on the bill.
