Four Standardbreds to head Philadelphia mounted force

Columbus, OH — The Philadelphia Police Department will soon have four new recruits in Standardbreds Broadway Kevin, Amazing Art, Seelster Sam N, and American Yankee.
According to a story in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the four Standardbreds were part of the Newark, N.J. mounted unit of 18 horses that will be out of work on Jan. 31, the victims of budget woes.
Philadelphia has not had a mounted police unit since 2004, when it was also cut for budgetary reasons after 32 years. But the newspaper story reports that this past November, the Police Department launched a campaign to raise about $2 million to restore what was always considered a highly effective program.
