Fourteen horses wait with hope

Cream Ridge, NJ — As the Standardbred Retirement Foundation continues to chisel at the slaughter bound trotters and pacers whose deadline is Friday (Aug. 10) at 8 p.m., the kindness that has been given to those to date has saved 24 of the 38 marked for shipment.
Still 18 homes are needed and $12,000 to release them from the kill pens, but without homes an additional $3,000 for each horse is also needed to give them care, likely through the winter, until adoptions pick up again.
Some home offers include a few for Clam Sauce, the elderly guy who needs veterinary attention, he is on his way right now to SRF for care. Nu Xample is being returned to his owner in Canada, and Da Vinci Road is already in quarantine with his adopter, she is one of the very few with stellar breeding, sired by Western Hanover. A wonderful home in Delaware is offering a place for two older horses, because she said, “I am old too.”
“There has been such tremendous help from people offering homes, owners and breeders who have taken their horses back, gifts to help release those from the kill buyers, but leaving 14 behind will be very painful, if it comes to that,” states Judy Bokman, SRF’s Executive Director. “We are not in the position to overextend further. Giving back to their horses has always been something we hoped owners, trainers, and drivers would be compelled to do, and appreciate those already stepping up. SRF hopes this critical situation generates others to follow so we can avoid the painful decision of who gets saved and who ships.”
