Free harness racing traveling exhibit at The Meadows

from the Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame

Goshen, NY — The Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame’s “What is Harness Racing?” Poster Series, sponsored by the CTW Foundation and Bob Tucker of Stonegate Standardbred Farms, will be on display at The Meadows in Washington, Pa., from Monday, July 25, through Saturday, July 30.

The Poster Series consists of seven colorful framed posters illustrating the uniquely American sport of harness racing. They provide a descriptive introduction to the American Standardbred horse and its historic bloodlines, the breed’s great progenitor Hambletonian 10, as well as the most significant foundation sires of both trotters and pacers.

Also included is a comprehensive timeline of important harness racing milestones from 1788 to the present time and a new storyboard spotlighting the Harness Racing Museum.

Recent venues hosting the Poster Series include the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library in Columbus, Mississippi and Lebanon Raceway in Lebanon, Ohio.

The Harness Racing Museum’s free traveling exhibits — “The Story of Harness Racing by Currier & Ives,” “What is Harness Racing?” Poster Series and “A Drive To Win” are available for loan to museums, art galleries, libraries, race tracks and other appropriate venues. The Museum is proud to announce that attendance figures for the popular exhibits have passed the one million mark!

“The Story of Harness Racing by Currier & Ives,” sponsored by the CTW Foundation and Bob Tucker of Stonegate Standardbred Farms, consists of more than 30 lithographs which illustrate harness racing’s important role in American culture and history. Prints depicting great trotting horses, bucolic mid-18th century scenes and comedic adventures convey a picturesque view of Americana prior to the advent and development of photography. “Currier & Ives” has most recently been on display at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois, the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook, New York, the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, Missouri, and the Museé du Trot in Grosbois, France.

In 2009 the Harness Racing Museum introduced its latest traveling exhibit, “A Drive to Win,” thanks to the generosity of Hanover Shoe Farms. Consisting of 30 framed posters, the exhibit celebrates the drivers and trainers who make every race possible, but through circumstance, choice, design or fate, did not rise to stardom. Their stories are poignant, thought-provoking and, most assuredly, worthy of our respect, affection and, above all, appreciation. “A Drive To Win” has most recently appeared at Tioga Downs, Vernon Downs and Batavia Downs in upstate New York, Lebanon Raceway in Lebanon, Ohio, and will appear at Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, New Jersey, during Hambletonian Week.

To be considered, depending upon the exhibit, venues must have adequate wall space, security, and in some cases a climate-controlled environment. Host applicants are considered on a first come, first served basis. Parties interested in hosting any of the exhibits — or can suggest any appropriate venues — please contact the Museum as soon as possible.

The Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame is located at 240 Main Street in Goshen, New York, and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (last tour 4 p.m.) Thanks to USTA support the Museum is currently offering free admission for walk-in visitors and $4.00/person for group docent-guided tours.
