From Georgia to Woodbine for Ramas Last Son

by Greg Gangle, WEG Communications

Toronto, ON — Ed Peconi, Jr. would love nothing more than for Ramas Last Son to capture his final start of the season this Friday at Woodbine.

After finishing first and fourth in the preliminary rounds, the rookie trotter will leave post five in race three in the C$28,200 final of the Autumn Series.

Three other Autumn Series finals will also take place on the Friday program for 2-year-olds of both gaits and sexes.

Ramas Last Son has banked $32,043 this season.

Ramas Last Son, a gelding by Majestic Son, has banked $32,043 this season along with an impressive 4-2-1 record from 12 appearances. His impressive 1:56.4 speed badge was taken earlier this year at Mohawk.

“He always had the speed and it’s not a real surprise to me on how well he’s raced this season,” Peconi said. “He’s a very handy horse and has been racing very well in this series.”

Ramas Last Son was developed in Georgia before shipping north with Peconi earlier this season.

“I trained him and two others this past winter in Hawkinsville, Ga.,” he said. “I was training the horse for the breeder (John Bosworth), but he sadly passed away. I really liked this horse so I encouraged my one owner (Garry Patterson) to buy him and the rest is history.”

When Ramas Last Son began his racing career, he didn’t have the most impressive start. He had a habit of making breaks.

“He trained down like a champion all winter, but when he started racing he wasn’t focusing on the task behind the gate. He just wasn’t himself, but he quickly learned and began to be easier to drive.

“He’s got a lot of slow miles in him and is very durable,” Peconi continued. “He’s not very big, but very handy.”

Peconi, a resident of Peterborough, will once again venture to Hawkinsville in the coming weeks, but not before an Autumn Stakes victory to cap off the season with Ramas Last Son.

“Wouldn’t that be great?” he said. “That would be a nice end to his season. This little horse sure loves to pass horses and buzz around the turns. There’s no end to him it seems. Hopefully that will set him up well for next year.”

He will once again be driven by Rick Zeron.

This series is for Ontario-sired 2-year-old colt trotters, who were non-winners of C$30,000 lifetime as of Sept. 30, 2013.

The field will line up as follows: 1. Aventure, 2. Oliver Silk, 3. Theresademoninme, 4. Federal Strike, 5. Ramas Last Son, 6. Wire Me Cash, 7. Hitchin A Ride, 8. Warrawee Preferred, 9. Kremlin, 10. Sas Warkentin.
