Akron, NY — Live racing was over at Tioga Downs but the crowd still came. They were there to witness the installation of the inaugural group of honorees into the Upstate New York Chapter of the United States Harness Writers Association’s new Hall of Fame.

The Winners Circle Lounge was overflowing with friends and family of the 13 horsemen who were feted this past Sunday (Sept. 12) afternoon. Roger Huston hosted the presentations that began right after dinner. Each horseman had an opportunity to reflect on his career after their biography was read and every one of them shared some great memories with the room.

The group combined founding stars of the modern era of racing with some of today’s most influential horsemen. It was a celebration that transcended generations of industry leaders and put the spotlight on their individual achievements and contributions.

Vernon Downs legend Jack Bailey summed up the event very well during his speech when he stated “This Hall of Fame is something that is long overdue; to give so many horsemen who raced here their just due. I am honored to be a part of this first group and happy to be here with all these other great horsemen today.”

The charter members of the class of 2010 included Jack Bailey, Clint Galbraith, William “Buddy” Gilmour, Jeff Gregory, Jeff Gural, Guy Howard, Ken Jacobs, Jim Moran, Gerry Sarama, Ray Schnittker, John Schroeder, Brian Sears and Dave Vance.

Their portraits are on permanent display at Tioga Downs and accessible online at www.upstatenyushwa.com simply by clicking on the Hall of Fame link. From that page you can enjoy each of their stories and pictures when you click on their names. There will be additional pictures from the event added there later this week.
