George Dalphon, 81, dies

Columbus, OH — George W. Dalphon, 81, of Blackbird, Delaware, died August 29, 2010, from complications received from a late 2009 brain injury.

Mr. Dalphon was born in Renovo, Pa., but moved with his family to Delaware as a young child. A graduate of PS DuPont High School, George joined the army, served in the post war occupation of Japan, and later served as a member of the Wilmington City police force. Later in his early twenties, he left the police force to devote his energies to the scrap recycling industry, where he enjoyed a successful and hardworking career until his retirement in 1991.

A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, he was passionately devoted, as both an owner and trainer, to the Standardbred horse racing business for the last 40 years. His devotion and passion was equally shared by his loving wife of 61 years, Joan Hall Dalphon.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, George W. Jr. (Mary Trimble) and Elanor Laws; grandchildren, Keri Allison Laws, Nichola (M. Barry) Morrison, Brandon Alan Laws, and Gwen Hall Dalphon; and his brother, Charles Jr. (Joan Thompson). He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Francis Dalphon; his in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hayman Hall; and his son-in-law, Donald Millar Laws.
