Columbus, OH — George Ernest Hobbs, 83, of Harrington, Del., died June 10, 2014, at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford.

Mr. Hobbs was born March 25, 1931, in Harrington, the son of the late Herman and Nellie (Wright) Hobbs. He graduated from Harrington High School in 1949 and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

He and his late brother Edward worked with their father on the family farm until his father’s death. His career as a Standardbred trainer and driver began at the age of 16 and he remained active in the sport currently as an owner, racing in New Jersey and locally. Mr. Hobbbs was especially fond of his horse Love You Most, who is stabled at Peninsula Farm in Kentucky.

He worked as a school bus owner and driver for the Lake Forest School District for 48 years and was the former owner of the Harrington Newsstand and Restaurant.

Mr. Hobbs liked to watch baseball and was a fan of the Baltimore Orioles. He also enjoyed playing baseball, his trumpet and piloting his Cessna. He thoroughly enjoyed his garden and would share what he grew with others. He was outspoken regarding his political ideas.

He was a member of the USTA, horsemen’s associations in N.Y., N.J., Ohio, Md. and Del; the V.F.W., Harrington Senior Center, Harrington Alumni Association, and formerly of the Moose Lodge and the A.O.P.A.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janette; sister and brother-in-law, Nellie Ann and renowned Del. horseman J.D. Dennis; nephews who are local Del. Valley drivers, George (Tina) Dennis and Eddie (Karen) Dennis; and nieces, Taylor, Jorden and Camryn.
