Gordon Waugh, 74, dies

Columbus, OH — Gordon F. Waugh, 74, of Vernon, N.Y., died Feb. 25, 2012.

He was born Oct. 7, 1937, in Gouverneur, N.Y., a son of the late Cyril and Shirley (Griffis) Waugh. He served in the United States Army from 1962-1964 and spent two years as a reservist and was honorably discharged in 1968. On Nov. 9, 1963, he married Priscilla A. Durant in St. Catherine’s Church of Vernon and shared that union until her death on Oct. 5, 2007.

Mr. Waugh was a member of Holy Family Church of Vernon.

He spent his entire life actively involved in harness racing as a driver, trainer and owner and won 1,196 races as a driver. He also spent the last 20 years as a presiding judge on the New York and Vermont Fair Circuit.

He is survived by his daughters, Cheri-Lee (Anthony) Ellert and Christy-Lee Wandover (companion, Richard Dominguez); grandchildren, Gabrielle, Jordan, Richard Dominguez and Deanna Dominguez; brothers, Hank, Fred and Elon; sisters, Jane and Linda Zehr; and several nieces and nephews, with special mention of Kathy, Tom, Jim and Scott.

Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday (Feb. 28) from 4-7 p.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc., 23 Front St., Vernon. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday (Feb. 29) at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Church, Peterboro Street, Vernon. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Oneida.
