Goshen Historic Track Scholarship race Sunday, June 5

by Chris Tully, General Manager, Goshen Historic Track

Goshen, NY — Goshen Historic Track kicks off its 50th anniversary of Matinee Racing on Sunday, June 5 with two divisions of the popular High School Scholarship Race. Founded and supported by leading trainer Ray Schnittker, the race has provided local school districts and college-bound seniors over $75,000 over the last two years.

The Hambletonian winning trainer was optimistic about this year’s crop of student drivers. “The kids have been here practicing every day. They turn and go the right way of the track and are learning fast. It should be a great race!” Schnittker remarked. Despite his busy race schedule, Ray has been tutoring many of the students himself about the nuances of horse training and driving.

The twelve students hail from a variety of districts in Orange and Sullivan counties. The race is part of the track’s annual Youth Day, which also features a live “Birds of Prey and Raptor” show, give-a-ways, a petting zoo, fire trucks, K-9 and bike safety demonstrations, and more.

Post time is 1 pm for all the Matinees on June 5, 12 & 19, 2011. Kids 12 and under enjoy free admission. In addition, Grand Circuit racing begins on Friday, July 1 with the New York Sire Stakes, and culminates on Monday, July 4. Hall of Fame day is slated for Sunday, July 3.
