Grand slam for Greg Merton at Monticello

Monticello, NY — The weather may have been cold and windy, but Greg Merton was not deterred, driving four winners on Thursday (Jan. 16) at Monticello Raceway.

Fly’n With Royalty ($3.70) was Merton’s first winner of the card, coming in the third race. The Thomas Milici-trained son of Panspacificflight scored a wire-to-wire 3-1/2 length win in 1:59.2 for his second win of the young season.

Merton caught fire and won the card’s final three races. Brookstone ($9.90) defeated Victory At Last by a neck in 2:01.2 for trainer David Dziengiel. Next up was invader Mansome ($3.00), who romped to a 5-1/2 length, 2:00.4 score for Elisha Lafreniere. In the last race, Tinos Pulse led every step of the way to win by two lengths for trainer Dawn Devaux in 2:02.3.

The early season leading dash driver is James Devaux with 13 wins. Merton’s four on the afternoon have him in second place with 12.

Monticello Raceway will be dark Monday (Jan. 20) for Martin Luther King Day, and will resume live racing on Tuesday (Jan. 21) with a 12:25 p.m. post time.
