GSY Series in action Friday at The Meadowlands

East Rutherford, NJ — The GSY races took place one more Friday (July 9) before they go on a mini-hiatus as the Grand Circuit and stakes races heat up.

Several leavers vied for early supremacy in the fifth race, and after a tepid :28 first quarter, Master Conrad (Bruno Chiodo) found himself in the lead.

He maintained that lead to the top of the stretch, but that is when the closers came calling. In the end, it was the post-time favorite, Art History (Juan Cano), who sat patiently on the rail and found clearance in the stretch to win by three-quarters of a length.

Always A Force(Anthony Verruso) finished second, and Make It Big (Newton “Yogi” Sheridan) got up for third. The mile went in 1:53.

The 11-year-old gelding is owned by Natalie Cowan of NJ and is trained by Besim Odza.

In the seventh race, there was an early battle for the top spot, and Vintage Gal (Anthony Verruso), at long odds, found the top spot in a quarter of :26.4.

He paid the price getting there, with Elrama N (Joseph Lee) taking the lead before the half. As Lee cleared, the veteran Texican N(Daniel Figliolino) made a brush to the top spot and cleared before the three-quarter pole.

The move may have been a bit early as he could not hold off the closers and finished fourth. It was Rock To Glory (Chiodo), the other 14-year-old in the race, who followed Texican N out early and ground his way to the lead in the stretch. He was able to hold off a hard-charging Scrappin Gold (Joseph Pennacchio), who finished second a nose ahead of Doctor Butch (John Calabrese).

The mile went in a fast 1:51.4. The 14-year-old is owned by Chiodo Racing LLC out of NJ and is trained by Stacy Chiodo.

The GSY series should be back after a few weeks off in September. They take their traveling road show to Tioga over the next few Sundays.
