Gundersen is King of the Derby in Norway

For the fourth time in a row and for the sixth time since 2013, a trotter trained by Geir Vegard Gundersen won the Norwegian Derby at Bjerke, Oslo.

And for the third time in four years, the winner, Kraesj, had Gundersen’s son Magnus in the bike.

And to make the triumph even bigger, Gundersen himself finished second driving Cicero GT.

The Norwegian Derby is raced for 4-year-old trotters over a distance of 2,600 meters or 1-5/8 miles.

The Gundersens dominated the race from start, as Kraesj went to the lead, but after 500 meters Cicero GT took over. Magnus Gundersen was looking for racing room going into the stretch and he found it 100 meters before the post. He took Kraesj to the outside and finished strong to win by a neck. The purse for the winner was $164,000.

Kraesj is sired by the French stallion Brillantissime (he by Ready Cash). The dam of Kraesj is Silver Rain, she by Pine Chip.

On the same card, the Norwegian Kriterium for 3-year-old trotters was won by I D Exceptional with Ole Johan Ôstre in the bike and trained by Stian Eilefsen. I D Exceptional is from the first crop by Norwegian stallion El Diablo BR (he by Muscle Hill).
