Harmon wins GSY Amateur Pace at Monticello

Monticello, NY — The GSY Amateur Driving Series made a stop at Monticello Raceway on Thursday (March 12) with Rob Harmon heading to the winners’ circle.

As the field of seven entered the first turn, the same script happened again in another week of amateur action, a speed duel.  This week’s battle for the front end included Vaganova (Chris Doherty) and Woodmere Rondevous (Matt Zuccarello).  Doherty left hard from the rail and wasn’t taking a back seat to anyone.  Thus yours truly was hung out to dry for the entire mile and the tough pacer faded towards the back of the pack as the field headed to the three-quarter pole.

As if the speed duel wasn’t enough action, post time favorite Zone Blitz (Joe Lee) was sitting the pocket behind Doherty and seemed to run upon the leader that caused Lee to grab up and go inside the pylons and then was pulled up and did not finish the race.

Down the backside the final time, the closers started to come calling led by the charge of Cheyenne Danny(Rob Harmon).  He moves three-wide around the tiring horse and kept his momentum going en route to a 2-1/2 length victory.  Doherty hung on for second and Steuben Magic Ride(Philip Bo Sowers) rounded out the trifecta.  The mile went in 1:57.3.

This 5-year old gelding is out of Cheyenne Rei is owned by Adam Friedland of NY and trained by Danny Gill.

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), the GSY will be on hiatus for at least a week but will return when permitted on Thursdays at Monticello and Friday at the Meadowlands.
