Harold Stone, 73, dies

Columbus, OH — Harold Stone, 73, a longtime horseman and USTA member, died April 27, 2010, in his hometown of Hume, Ill.

Mr. Stone was born May 18, 1936, in Metcalf, Ill., the son of John and Minnie Herrington Stone. He married Doris Jean Barrett on September 17, 1955. in Hume.

Mr. Stone graduated from Young America High School in 1954. He worked for the B & O Railroad for 13 years. He was the Hume Postmaster from December 1967 until August 2003.

Since retirement he enjoyed several hobbies including Standardbred racing and raising and showing sheep and goats. He was a loyal democrat and his favorite pastimes included keeping in touch with family and friends, e-mailing, enjoying Chicago Cubs baseball, and watching University of Illinois basketball.

He was a member of the St. Michaels Catholic Church since 1955.

Mr. Stone is survived by his wife of 54 years, Doris; children, Phyllis, Randy (Karen), Brenda (Marty) Jones and Janet (Tim) Vandivier; grandchildren, Casey (Jami) Jones, Cager, Justin (Lindsey), Tiffany (Shawn) Sallee, Travis, Jamie (Michael) Huffman and Jennifer Vandivier; and nieces, Carolyn Pennington, Charlotte Watson, Sharon Hornbrook and Shirley. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William.

Joines Appleby Funeral Home of Newman, Ill., is in charge of arrangements. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 30, at the St. Michaels Catholic Church in Hume. Father Paul Skelton will officiate. Burial will be held at the Young America Cemetery in Hume. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening, April 29, at the Joines Appleby Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. with a prayer service to be held at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
